Gallery and Front of House Assistant

Dialogue Hub is now hiring as part of the Kickstart Scheme.

Dialogue Hub is a critical exchange platform for creatives and local talent to showcase their work to the public. It is a multi-purpose space that hosts a British Sign Language Coffee shop, an immersive experience and artist residency program as well as regular events and workshops. At its core, the Dialogue Hub concept is about ‘giving back' to the local community through partnerships with the London Borough of Lambeth.

Summary:

The Gallery and Front of House Assistant help to welcome and orientate visitors to space, assists customers with cafe, gallery and immersive experience, assists in the production of the exhibitions programme and helps with the smooth running of the building and administration systems.

Terms:

· Fixed term 6 months.

· NLW, 25 hours per week.

· Place of work: Dialogue Hub, Waterloo, London

· (Occasional flexibility may be required e.g. assisting exhibition installs & launch events)

· Includes pension contribution, holiday entitlement, contractual sick pay

· Reports to Co-Operations Manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Front of house:

● Staff the Hub front desk and proactively welcome visitors to the gallery

● Respond to telephone and email enquiries

● Help orientate and support visitors in Dialogue Hub so they get the most from their visit

● Switch-on and off exhibitions, monitor exhibition working, alert colleagues when things need fixing and/or fix as appropriate

● Provide front of house assistance for exhibition launch events

● Ensure cafe, gallery, entryways and common parts are kept tidy

● Maintain the safety and integrity of artwork at all times

● Escalate premises and safety concerns where appropriate

● Undertake basic housekeeping checks including monitoring climate control systems

● Keep a record of visitor figures

● Assist with completion and storage of visitor surveys

The Cafe and Gallery:

● Staff the cafe shop and help maximize sales

● Assist customers, process sales and payments where necessary

● Fulfill orders and manage inventory using point of sale software (training will be given)

● Maintain the shop environment including placement and condition of visual merchandising, stock, and brand elements

● Provide customer service in response to personal, telephone, and email inquiries

● Monitor incoming sales from the online shop

● Assist with all customer inquiries, returns, and refunds

Exhibition development and production:

● Develop a good understanding of the Hub’s philosophy and program of exhibitions

● Carry out research for exhibitions and projects if required

● Assist with installation and de-installation of exhibitions if required

General:

● Hold keys to the Hub and open and close gallery as appropriate

● Assist with supervision of volunteers at Hub events if required

● Assist all colleagues with occasional general tasks as necessary

These are illustrative duties and the post holder may be expected to become involved in a range of other duties as reasonably required in line with the role.

Person Specification

You must be aged 18-24 years old, and unemployed and claiming Universal Credit.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • A good all-round level of education is preferable, but not essential.

  • An interest in arts and culture

  • Some experience or interest in music or drama. Good people skills and ability to work in a team.

  • Able to get on with a variety of people: young people, parents, theatre staff, teachers.

  • Good people skills and ability to work in a team.

  • Good time management

  • An interest in music and/or the arts and working with young people.

  • Adaptable, determined and able to work well under pressure.

  • Confident use of IT and able to work online effectively and responsibly (IDEAL not essential).

  • Able to use Microsoft Office / Google Drive (IDEAL not essential). Good communication (including clear written English) and organisation skills.

  • Enthusiastic and hard-working with excellent attention to detail.

  • Can work independently with some supervision.

*This role is specifically for young people between 18 and 24 years old, currently on universal credit and eligible for Kickstart. All roles will be initially for a period of six months but with the potential for permanent employment at the end.
